If you are an academically motivated junior or senior at Abingdon, Holston, John Battle, Patrick Henry, Chilhowie, Northwood, or Virginia High Schools, you could be eligible to earn FREE college credits by participating in VHCC’s Governor’s School!
There are limited spaces in the program, so apply now! Competitive admission is based on academic performance and a selection process by the high school principals and guidance counselors.
PLAY ANALYSIS & INSTRUCTION
CST 130 (3 CREDITS)
Participants in CST 130 will read and discuss a number of plays, participate in acting and improvisation workshops, and visit Barter Theatre, where they will get a behind-the-scenes look at the various aspects of live theater production. Taught by Dave Burns, English teacher at Northwood High School.
THREE DIMENSIONAL DESIGN
ART 132 (3 CREDITS)
Introduces the elements and principles of design as applied to three-dimensional studio projects. Introduces three-dimensional media, techniques, compositional strategies, and color concepts and interactions. Supports conceptual development through introduction to historical and contemporary practices and critical analysis.
HEALTH CAREERS EXPLORATION
HLT 105, HLT 140, NUR 135 (4 CREDITS)
Students will learn about many areas of the health care field during this two week program. Areas that may be explored will include radiology, medical assisting, working in the simulation lab and with state of the art manikins, as well as obtaining the First Aid and CPR Certifications. Anyone thinking about health care as a potential career would benefit greatly from this class.
Students will earn college credit in each of the following courses:
- HLT 105 - Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation
Provides training in coordinated mouth-to-mouth artificial ventilation and chest compression, choking, life-threatening emergencies and sudden illness.
- HLT 140 - Orientation to Health Professions
Explores the interrelated roles and functions of various members of the
health team.
- NUR 135 - Drug Dosage Calculations
Focuses on apothecary, metric, household conversion in medication
dosage calculation for adult and pediatric clients. Provides a practical
approach to learning to calculate and prepare medications and solutions.
Includes calculating intravenous flow rates.
