Outdoor portrait of VHCC alumna Jaquelin Cruz smiling warmly, wearing a grey and white striped t-shirt and blue jeans, standing in front of vibrant red and green autumn trees.

Jaquelin Cruz is a phenomenal example of how to leverage dual enrollment and community college programs into a fast track toward a medical career. Jaquelin managed an incredible academic trifecta, earning an Associate of Arts and Science in Science, a Career Studies Certificate in Pre-Pharmacy, and the Uniform Certificate of General Studies (UCGS).

She used that massive head start to transfer to East Tennessee State University, where she earned her Bachelor’s of Biomedical Health Science. But her journey doesn't stop there—her ultimate destination is a seat in a pharmacy clinic. “Thanks to VHCC, I was accepted into the Early Admission Program at the Bill Gatton College of Pharmacy," Jaquelin shared. "It also gave me a debt-free jump start on my way to earning my Doctorate in Pharmacy!”

Jaquelin's academic confidence began early, specifically in her high school days, thanks to the collaborative programs at the college. When looking back at the instructors who shaped her work ethic, one educator stands out. “Amanda Gardner, my DE Biology teacher, is who I think contributed the most to my current success in college," said Jaquelin. "She gave me a realistic view into what college-level material was going to look like while still making it engaging.”

Now deep into her advanced scientific coursework, Jaquelin has cracked the code on how to excel in high-level university programs, and she wants current and future students to know the secret to her success.

“I think the most important piece of advice I could give is to focus on truly understanding concepts versus just memorizing material," Jaquelin advised. "It is definitely more work, but it will allow you to apply it going forward in future coursework.”
