Education
Barbara graduated from VHCC with an Associate of Arts & Sciences Degree in Education in 1972, a Bachelor's Degree in Psychology from Virginia Intermont in 1976, and a Master's Degree in Education from Grand Canyon University in 2012.
Career
Barbara dedicated her career to public service as a social worker and director of a campus daycare at Virginia Intermont College, a Head Start Director for People Inc., a part-time employee of Bristol Crisis Center, and a substitute teacher and team teacher for Bristol Virginia Public Schools. She also worked as a private consultant for more than 20 years. She is now retired.
Awards & Personal Life
She has been a member of New Hope Baptist Church for 72 years, longer than any other member, and has served in various capacities for the church’s Sunday School program, choirs, usher board, mission and trustees ministry. She also has served the community as a member of the Bristol Virginia Board of Zoning Appeals, and as Head Start President for Virginia, Regional Vice President and National Head Start Board of Directors. Her many honors include recognition by the Bristol Redevelopment and Housing Authority for her valuable service to the Find A Way Program. The program serves former housing authority residents who found a better life for themselves and their families. Barbara lives in Bristol, and is the proud mother of four children, all of whom are college graduates, five grandchildren and six great grandchildren.
