Resources for Success

Resources for Success

We want to help you get started on your educational journey. The resources listed below will help you succeed.

All students admitted to VHCC (Virginia Highlands Community College) are assigned a VCCS (Virginia Community College System) student account. The myVHCC student account is your gateway to accessing a host of information about yourself, classes, grades, and other important information.

You will receive a temporary password that is good for 30 days when you complete your online application. If you don’t set up your password within 30 days, you will be locked out of myVHCC. You will use these same credentials to access myVHCC, your student portal – SIS, which allows you to register for classes, schedule advising appointments and access Canvas for course work. Make sure you keep your username and password in a safe place!

All student accounts are protected with Multi-Factor Authentication. Multi-factor authentication (MFA) creates a more secure online environment and ensures that only you have access to your VHCC accounts. MFA adds an additional layer, such as cell phone PUSH alerts, authentication application, text message, or email, to your login to verify that only YOU can access your personal myVHCC. The default set up is Email Based One Time Password. There are other alternative set ups such as Temporary One Time Password or Receiving a Temporary One Time Code via Text Messaging (SMS).

One of the most important first steps for any new student at VHCC is activating your student account. You will receive confirmation from us notifying you of your acceptance and assigning you a student username. (If for some reason that your application cannot be accepted immediately, we will let you know).

Visit myVHCC from a desktop computer to activate your account. The mobile version of myVHCC cannot be used to activate your account. Be sure not to skip setting up your security questions, this step is mandatory when you first log in. Once you have set up your password and security questions, close your browser and wait 10 minutes for your password to be synced.

Then, it is time to go to myVHCC and log in using the password you just set up.

If for some reason you forget your username and password, go to myVHCC and click on “Forgot Username” or “Forgot Password” to look up your username and reset your password. You may also use the Advanced Password Reset tool.

If you are locked out of your myVHCC account, call the VHCC IT Help Desk at 276-739-2500.

After entering your username and password, you will be directed to your My Applications page. To access your email, go to the Gmail app. Your student email address can be found by hovering over the “Virginia Community Colleges” logo in the upper right-hand corner. You must use this account to correspond with VHCC faculty and staff, and you should check this account regularly for important campus updates, events, and other information.

Canvas is the VHCC online learning management system. Canvas is used both for online courses and those that meet on campus. Your Canvas account may be accessed in myVHCC. Click on the Canvas app and you will see your classes on the Dashboard. Access each course by clicking on the corresponding title. Not every instructor will use Canvas, so be sure to check your email. Courses typically appear on Canvas two to three days before the Class start date.
